Sr. Director Nutrition Science supporting Beverage Category

PepsiCo Beverage brands such as Pepsi, mountain Dew, Aquafina, Bubbly and Tropicana are instrumental to the future growth of PepsiCo. This leadership role is integral to the success of the global R&D category team by providing a sound scientific basis for the strategic plans related to current portfolio renovations and future innovations to help shape the category. This leader will guide the nutrition renovation strategy globally, while execution will remain the responsibility of the regional R&D teams. In addition, this role will lead a nutrition science program that aims to deliver proprietary nutrition benefits on existing and future products in the beverage category to further differentiate the brands.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Contribute nutrition expertise, executional excellence and operational leadership at an executive level to the Life science LT representing the beverage category globally within the life science team.
  • This role will provide strategic guidance to long term Strategic planning for the global beverage category BU and serve as a technical resource for the category LT supporting SVP R&D for the beverage category and to the R&D category LT as needed to support strategic planning and global innovation.
  • This role will also have specific responsibility for the PepsiCo North American Beverages BU including supporting the marketing, sales, consumer insights and other commercial teams to drive growth through nutrition communications and innovation insights.
  • The leader will be responsible for leading a team of nutrition experts in the areas of hydration, energy, sugar reduction and emerging ingredients, and will partner with the R&D platform leads to help develop strategy for the category.
  • This leader will advance a robust nutrition research program with a keen focus on intellectual property where feasible to ensure we protect our advantage going forward. This leader will seek full alignment for the program with the Category R&D LT and the Life Science LT.
  • This leader will provide updates and guidance related to the nutrition category to the VP of nutrition sciences and all the regional nutrition science leaders. Regular “wiring” meetings will occur monthly between this role and the regional teams to ensure readiness as new claims/positions or strategy changes related to renovation will impact on the region.
  • This position has responsibility for people, project and process management to drive innovation growth and mitigate brand risk. This requires a broad scope and understanding of US and International nutrition agendas, competitors and legal/regulatory frameworks. This role has specific responsibilities related to external engagement and risk mitigation in North America and will be the lead for nutrition science in industry associations such as the American Beverage Association
Core competencies:

Individual must be able to:
  • Evaluate and translate internal and external clinical data to identify market ready opportunities for the business units and advise on the integration of such opportunities in terms of claims, IP, Positioning etc and provide the beverage category R&D LT and R&D with a comprehensive account of how the global nutrition function can be leveraged for their advantage and ensure direct feedback to the global nutrition and life science department on the needs of the Beverage Global Category.
  • Have a keen understanding of consumer needs, societal trends and regulatory directions is necessary to design a research program which will deliver relevant solutions to the business in a format that is readily applicable in consumer products. For this he/she will partner with several functions: Consumer Insights, PR/Communications, SA/RA, R&D and other teams as needed.
  • Enable the organization to make informed decisions on innovation on health and wellness related issues in the context of hydration, energy, sugar reduction and other beverage-relevant issues and opportunities and key health states such as heart health, digestive health, energy, weight management and diabetes.
  • Ability to network internally and influence highly matrix teams to achieve the end goal is a must; key stakeholders will be regulatory, marketing, legal, product development, consumer insights and business unit leaders.
  • Identify talent; build capability and higher levels of competency for scientific research and rigor within your team to advance the translation of nutrition science in PepsiCo products to the best possible standard. Develop high performers and ensure their career growth for the benefit of PepsiCo. Ensure the BU needs are fully resourced.
  • Maintain a strong network with the academic community, key influencers, federal and trade organizations, in addition to peers within industry.
  • Leverage position housed in global business to foster communication and sharing of best practices across the globe. Build key relationships across a complex matrix environment with competing priorities, with ability to balance scientific interests with commercial needs.
  • Provide leadership to regional partners by recognizing opportunities of synergy and cross collaboration in terms of sharing scientific and technical insights.
  • Be a strategic and active member of the Beverage category R&D LT


Skills and Experience:

  • PhD degree in nutrition science with 10+ years’ experience in Nutrition science & research in a commercial environment. Strong publication record.
  • Ability to lead a team and coordinate a scientific program and budget.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct a clinical program with tangible marketable outcomes for example claims, IP positioning etc.
  • Strong experience with trade associations, external engagement and health professional outreach and education to advocate for science-based policy.
  • Demonstrated ability in commercially relevant research.
  • Strong leadership presence and ability to work and communicate effectively in cross functional teams, while aggressively working together to meet timelines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility and ability to work with diverse cultural backgrounds, personalities, work styles with in various levels of the organization.
  • Use scientific technical expertise for identification and evaluation of trends/ innovations in nutrition science and novel ingredients
  • Champion nutrition education and training for internal audiences.
  • Enable sound business decisions and generate positive business results.

  • Feedback from stakeholders and regional Nutrition and direct reports
  • Feedback from stakeholders and global beverage category leaders to transfer information or approaches to find solutions.
