Functional Description:
PepsiCo is seeking a graduate student for a co-op program between the PepsiCo Nutrition Science department and the Division of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This program will provide the opportunity for students to engage with leading industry scientists and gain hands-on work experience at a leading food and beverage manufacturer. The Nutrition Science department at PepsiCo conducts scientific research, translates nutrition science for consumers and health professionals, and leads internal nutrition education efforts.

What you can expect:
Student will work on a defined project on a part-time basis for a period of 4 – 6 months, depending on project length. Time commitment is expected to be 10 hours per week. A competitive hourly rate will be provided by PepsiCo.

Student will have the opportunity to work on a project designed to fit their skills and interests and the business needs of the company. Potential projects include:

  • Write an internal to PepsiCo scientific white paper on a nutrition science topic of interest to the juice and/or grains businesses
  • Conduct a systematic review of the scientific literature to assess scientific evidence for the health benefits of ingredients of interest to the company
  • Develop nutrition education materials (e.g., infographics, webinars, research summaries) for internal and external audiences
  • Assist in the design and development of a clinical research study charter

Student will work remotely from the UIUC campus. The student will visit the PepsiCo offices in Chicago at the beginning of the co-op to meet their mentor, engage with Nutrition Science department staff, and obtain resources (e.g., PepsiCo-issued laptop.) The student will have the opportunity to visit the PepsiCo office on an as-needed basis throughout the co-op. The student will be included in team meetings as appropriate. The student will give a final presentation (in person or via telepresence) of their work to the PepsiCo Nutrition Science department at the end of the project.

Please note that students will have access to proprietary information during the co-op. As such, a confidentiality agreement between the student and PepsiCo will be required.

The student may be considered for a full-time position at the end of the co-op depending on position availability, job performance, and organizational fit.

Qualifications/Requirements

What we’re looking for:

  • Graduate student (M.S. or Ph.D.) currently enrolled in the UIUC DNS program; 2nd year or higher
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of professionalism
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office suite
  • Self-starter with strong project management skills
  • Interest in translating science for use in supporting the benefits of food products
